MarinaTex
MarinaTex is a translucent and flexible sheet material made of fish offcuts and red algae that could be used for a range of single-use packaging.
Lucy Hughes developed MarinaTex for the final-year project of her undergraduate degree at Sussex University. It is the result of more than 100 prototype tests carried out mainly on the kitchen stove of her student flat and biodegrades after four to six weeks.
MarinaTex is a versatile material that can be an alternative to plastic in a variety of applications. From bags to single-use packaging, MarinaTex has a variety of different applications. The transparent film is well suited for packaging and will biodegrade in a soil environment. The organic formula does not leach harmful chemicals and can be consumed, causing no harm to wildlife or humans. Check out the MarinaTex website to find out more: https://lnkd.in/dVnyvxU
In November last year, Lucy was announced as the overall winner of the James Dyson Award for her invention MarinaTex – beating entrants from 27 countries to win the prize and £30,000.
Well done Lucy! We’ll certainly be keeping an eye on how MarinaTex progresses!
