Position detection technologies for consumer goods

Client overview

A consumer goods company was interested in location detection technologies, enabling the position of a device to be tracked in real time. The company produces electronic devices and wanted to integrate position detection functionality into future product development. They had undertaken some initial prototyping but wanted to understand if the technology utilised in early testing was optimal for their applications, or if there were promising alternatives that should be investigated through future R&D. The client asked Strategic Allies Ltd (SAL) to undertake a broad technology landscape of position detection technologies to support ideation and fuel their product development pipeline. The client had a specific initial use case, but the landscape was designed to capture a broad range of technologies with differing functionality to suit a range of potential future applications.

The search

SAL identified and appraised position detection technologies capturing information to assist the client. For each technology SAL included the perceived advantages and disadvantages in the context of the client’s use case, alongside key technical metrics. The landscape was broad, designed to include various technologies used in adjacent industries. This comprehensive overview was condensed into a simple, searchable table, allowing the client to use this as a resource in the future and search against specific technical criteria. SAL also captured a series of case studies, ranging from academic work to commercial products, with applications akin to the client’s use case. The case studies enabled an in-depth analysis of different technology types, while simultaneously flagging potential challenges in implementation, and highlighting adopted solutions. SAL ultimately provided recommendations of technologies to pursue further, with the assessment based on the fundamentals behind the different technologies and evidence from the use cases. SAL also profiled several promising partners that the client could engage with in the next phase of development.

“Very clear, thanks a lot”

“Inspiring work”

“Thanks for all the hard work and explaining it the way you did”

Outcome

18 different technology formats were profiled in depth

17 case studies with relevance to the client’s use case were detailed, allowing practical challenges and solutions to be explored

SAL produced an in-depth Excel and a secondary simplified searchable table for the client to use in future

SAL provided strategic recommendations and actionable next steps
