Natural cosmetic actives: the science behind botanical ingredients for skincare
Clean beauty has moved on. Innovation teams are no longer choosing botanicals for marketing appeal alone; they want natural cosmetic actives with clinical-grade evidence behind them. The trend for natural beauty has shifted to botanical ingredients which are scientifically validated. Consumers are interested in clean beauty and are looking for products that deliver rapid, evidence-based benefits due to their natural, rather than synthetic ingredients. For ingredient suppliers, that means one thing: find natural products with proven functional benefits, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial… and prove it.
Antioxidants from resurrection plants: Myrothamnus flabellifolius
In 2012, fashion designer Giorgio Armani launched his skin care line, Crema Nera, based on the plant Myrothamnus flabellifolius, a so-called resurrection plant that grows in Southern Africa. Resurrection plants survive drought. In dry weather they lose up to 95% of their water and appear completely dead but rehydrate and turn green within 12 hours of rain. These plants contain a range of antioxidant chemicals they use to survive the extreme water loss and heat that kills other plants. These antioxidants can scavenge reactive oxygen species including singlet oxygen, superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. The predominant low molecular weight antioxidants in M. flabellifolius leaves are polyphenols particularly galloylquinic acids, including 3,4,5-tri-O-galloylquinic acid.
For formulators, this matters because the same mechanism that keeps the plant alive in drought is the mechanism that protects skin cells from oxidative stress, a direct, explainable line from botany to bioactivity.

Botanical alternatives to retinoids: bakuchiol from Psoralea corylfolia
Medicinal plants and an understanding of their history of use have been the inspiration for many new functional ingredients. The compound bakuchiol is a good example. Extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylfolia, a plant used in Chinese and Indian traditional medicine for treating psoriasis and leprosy, bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol. Although structurally unlike retinoids, it can function as a functional analogue of retinol, a compound used in topical treatments for acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. In vitro studies with skin models have shown that bakuchiol stimulates similar patterns of gene expression to retinol, and it is used in some cosmetic products as a retinol alternative. It is one of the clearest examples of a natural ingredient matching a synthetic gold standard on efficacy, not just on marketing claims.
Natural antimicrobials: berberine from Berberis
In Asia, the stem and roots of Berberis plants have been used for over 3,000 years to treat ailments including inflammation, infectious diseases, diabetes, and constipation. The active compound these plants contain is a molecule called Berberine, a quaternary ammonium alkaloid compound. Studies published in 2024 have demonstrated that Berberine has potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Berberine is active against Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium that triggers eczema, and it also inhibits Cutibacterium acnes, a pathogen that causes the inflammation associated with acne. In vitro studies have shown that Berberine suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, that cause skin redness and swelling. Crucially for formulators, this isn’t a fringe ingredient. Extracts of Berberis vulgaris, Coptis chinensis, and Hydrastis canadensis, all herbal sources of Berberine, are listed on the EU’s CosIng database. These cosmetic ingredients are commercially available and suitable for use in skin conditioning products.

AI is accelerating the discovery of natural cosmetic actives
This is where the real shift is happening. Bioprospecting used to mean years of screening, isolating and testing candidate compounds. Machine learning and deep learning models can now analyse large, complex datasets, to identify promising bioactive compounds far faster than traditional methods allow. Companies adopting AI for bioprospecting include California-based, Brightseed, who claim they can “accelerate bioactive discovery, biological validation and ingredient formulation from years to months”. That’s a genuinely different R&D timeline, worth watching closely if you’re setting ingredient strategy for the next three to five years. There are still challenges to the use of AI e.g., it is important that predictive models are fully trained to identify and categorise novel natural products, particularly where information on the target molecule is lacking. But progress is rapid, and AI is producing a real paradigm shift in natural product research.
